Rwanda: Emerging Excellence in East African Coffee

Writer: Justin VanHoyJustin VanHoy

Rwanda's coffee industry has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years, and at Haiku Brew Coffee, we're proud to support this evolution through our carefully selected Rwandan offerings. The country's high altitude growing regions and predominant Bourbon variety create coffees with remarkable sweetness and complexity.

Our Rwandan selections primarily come from the Lake Kivu region, where washing stations have developed exceptional protocols for processing and quality control. These coffees typically display bright orange citrus notes, honey sweetness, and a tea-like delicacy that makes them particularly appealing for filter coffee preparation. The high growing elevations (1,700-2,000 meters) contribute to the slow development of complex flavors in the coffee cherries.

Rwanda's coffee industry is characterized by smallholder farmers who typically grow coffee alongside other crops. We work with cooperatives that support these farmers with technical assistance and ensure fair compensation for quality harvests. The careful sorting and processing at cooperative washing stations results in extremely clean and sweet coffees that showcase the best of Rwanda's coffee potential.
