Guatemala: Ancient Volcanic Soils Meet Modern Coffee Excellence

Writer: Justin VanHoyJustin VanHoy

Guatemala's coffee-growing regions benefit from some of the most ideal conditions nature can provide. At Haiku Brew Coffee, we focus particularly on beans from the Antigua and Huehuetenango regions, where ancient volcanic soils combine with high altitude growing conditions to produce coffees of exceptional quality and character.

The Antigua Valley, surrounded by three volcanoes, produces coffees with a distinct profile that we prize for their chocolate notes and crisp, clean acidity. Our Antigua offerings typically display notes of milk chocolate, orange citrus, and subtle spice, with a creamy body that makes them particularly well-suited for espresso preparation. The region's unique microclimate, with warm days and cool nights, allows for slow maturation of the coffee cherries, developing complex sugars that contribute to the coffee's sweetness.

Huehuetenango, one of the highest and driest non-volcanic regions in Guatemala, produces some of our most complex coffees. Growing at altitudes of up to 2,000 meters, these coffees develop intense sweetness and bright acidity, with distinctive notes of apple, honey, and caramel. The remote location of many Huehuetenango farms means that most producers process their own coffee, leading to small lots with distinctive characteristics that we carefully select for our customers.
